State Level Workshop on Mariculture

Department of marine science, Department of Zoology of Sir P.P. Institute of Science, M.K.B. University and Gujarat Ecology Commission - The State ENVIS Hub, Gandhinagar have jointly organized one day state level workshop on “Mariculture as a tool for coastal livelihood option for fisher folk of Gujarat state”.


In this workshop total 112 participants, including students, local fisherman from different coastal villages of Bhavnagar, aquaculture related entrepreneurs have whole heartedly participated. The workshop was aimed to explore and discuss the possibilities of mariculture activities for the fisher folk and young graduates to develop a livelihood option. Due to the decline in natural fishery resources since last few decades, it is necessary to develop livelihood option for coastal communities and self-entrepreneur that are engaged in fishery related business. Honourable voice chancellor Dr. S.N.Zala of M.K.B University, Dr. P.C. Mankodi, HOD, Dept of zoology MS university of Baroda, and Dr. Mohan Ram DCF, Bhavnagar inaugurated the function.


The workshop was divided into two technical session. The chairman of the first technical session was Dr. Ashish Shukla, Head, Dept. of zoology, sir P.P. Institute of science. In the first session Dr.Pradip Mankodi gave a talk on ornamental fish culture, by his presentation he gave an opportunity how to develop this method at home and practice at home in our aquarium. Dr. Hitesh Kardani of JAU gave an excellent idea about culture and cultivation of pearl oyster, not only that he also explain how to identify real pearl and explain the difference between freshwater and marine water pearl. Dr. Paresh.U. Poriya of Dept. of marine science delivered a culture on lobster culture, he explained different method applied in lobster culture and where and how it is being practiced. Dr. Krupa Jha explained about the GEC - The State ENVIS Hub, she also give information about training program on mangrove restoration and plantation which is being carried out by the ENVIS centre GEC. Dr. P.P.Dodia the chairman of second session started the session after a short lunch break. Dr. Vaibhav Mantri Senior Scientist from CSMCRI, Bhavnagar delivered a lecture on seaweed and their culture. In his lecture he describe different method of seaweed culture and the economic importance of different extract like agar, carrageen and alginic obtained from seaweed and how seaweed can used as food source in different form. Dr.G. Thirumaran, a scientist from Gujarat institute of Desert Ecology Bhuj explain about mariculture and its sources used as an option for livelihood of local fisherman. He narrated the practice performed by the fisherman of jakhau coast of kachchh under the guidance of GUIDE.


Dr. Ravindra Patel of Virbac animal health Pvt. ltd talked about the difficulties during fish and prawn culture and how it can be cured by the use of different medicine produce by their company.


The third technical session was a panel discussion along with experience sharing from the shrimp farmers and the fisherman as well as students participants the session was full of interaction Dr. H.V.Joshi by director CSMCRI(Rtd) has very actively described the aspect of the workshop. Dr.Krupa from GEC-ENVIS and all the invited experts were empanelled in the discussion.


Dr. P.P.Dodiya, Sir P.P.Institute of sci. gave votes of thank at the end of the workshop.
This workshop gave a valuable idea about the opportunity for future as a new source of job and private business to all the people present over there.
