GEC & TERI ENVIS centre organizes a one day seminar on renewable energy
The ENVIS centre’s of GEC and TERI has jointly organized a seminar on Ecological Aspects of Renewable Energy Development in India on December 4, 2015. The seminar was inaugurated by Shri Punamchand Parmar, IAS Principal Secretary, Forests & Environment Department, Government of Gujarat; Shri Prabir Sengupta, IAS (Retd), Distinguished Fellow & Director (Knowledge Management Centre), TERI; Shri Abhay Kumar, IAS Dy. Economic Advisor, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India; Shri J. A. Khan, IFS PCCF & Chairman, Gujarat Biodiversity Board; Shri A. K. Saxena, IFS Member Secretary, GEC & APPCF (Land); Shri Bharat Pathak, IFS, Director, GEER Foundation and Shri A. C. Sampat, Director, GEC.
In his inaugural speech, Shri Punamchand Parmar emphasized on the need to evolve green energy production to conserve our environment in the coming years. He also referred to the renewable energy development practices of Israel and the efforts of Gujarat state in creating solar power in the most unique ways, such as Solar Park, roof top solar projects, canal top solar power to name a few. Shri Parmar also expressed his views that only a balanced growth would lead us to a sustainable future.
Whereas, Shri A. K. Saxena lauded the efforts of GEC and TERI in bringing together young researchers and the experts of renewable energy sector on a common platform to share and discuss the possibilities yet to tap. He pressed on the need to pool together the large amount of data, which available on different platforms.
The seminar was attended by 78 participants, who represented different academic and research institutes, government organizations, NGOs and entrepreneurs. The participants were from Centre for Environment Education, National Institute of Occupational Health, Consumer Education and Research Centre, WWF India, Central University of Gujarat, GEMI, Gujarat Forensic Sciences University, GERMI, Gujarat Power Engineering & Research Institute, Action Group, R.K. University, B.H. Gardi College of Engineering & Technology, GCPC, JJRWA, Samarth Trust, Photonics, Arham Associates, CSMCRI, MVSM, GUIDE, Aniket Gram Vikas Trust, GEER Foundation, PS Collective, GPCB, Forests & Environment Department GoG, North Gujarat University, CEPT University and School of Science – Gujarat University.
The plenary sessions and panel discussions dwelled upon following themes:
• Overview of ecology & environment by using various renewable energy options
• Ecological development using renewable energy
• Conservation of ecology and environment through renewable energy sources
The seminar also helped in sharing information about the ENVIS centre and its functions. The ENVIS centres of Gujarat, such as GEC, CEE, CERC, GCPC and NIOH made a presentation to the participants so that more and more researchers and policy makers could make use of the data and facilities available with the ENVIS centres.
