Para-taxonomy course begins under Green Skill Development Programme

Under the Green Skill Development Programme, Gujarat Ecology Commission – ENVIS Hub in association with Department of Botany & Zoology, M. S. University, Vadodara has initiated a four month course on para-taxonomy. Twenty students are enrolled for the course, which was inaugurated on September 14, 2018 by Dr. Ashok Kumar Saxena, IFS PCCF & Member Secretary, GEC along with the department head and faculties of Department of Botany & Zoology, M. S. University. The course details are as follows:


Course module
• Basic concept in biodiversity and taxonomy
• Floral diversity and endemism
• Filed surveys, collection, preservation, identification and analysis of fauna – principles and procedures
• Field surveys, collections and identification of flora
• Economic botany and traditional knowledge
• People’s Biodiversity Register (PBRs) for sustainable development (Faunal component)
• Wildlife (Fauna) Protection & Conservation
• Wildlife (Flora) Protection and Conservation
• Common course module on GRID-DSS and GIS


Opportunities to work
• Collection, preservation and curation of flowering plants and major animal phyla with scientific establishments
• Working with museums/herbariums for cataloguing, data base creating and maintenance of specimens
• Preparation of PBR documents
• Habitat survey using GRID-DSS approach, mapping and monitoring of flora and fauna using mobile apps and e-tools




Demonstrative course on community based mangrove conservation

A month long course on community based mangrove conservation has begun from September 25, 2018 as a part of Green Skill Development Programme implemented by GEC-ENVIS Hub. The course is being conducted for 50 participants by sector experts in Bharuch district. The course details are as follows:

• Introduction to mangrove ecosystem, mangrove species diversity and ecosystem services
• Mangrove ecology and environment
• Mangrove associated flora and fauna
• Mangrove propagation and nursery techniques
• Transplantation of mangroves
• Threats and stress on mangroves
• Conservation & management strategies
• Socio-economic assessment and supplementary livelihoods


Opportunities to work
• Growing demand in field and lab technical posts
• Opportunities in the field of tourism industries (as tourist guides) in addition to NGOs, research institutions, universities etc.
• Self employment to coastal rural youth and socio-economic upliftment of coastal population in utilizing mangrove resources




Sensitization of GEC Team on Status of Ground Water

Officials from Central Ground Water Board, West Central Region; Shri Anoop Nagar, Regional Director and Shri Ashok Kumar, Scientist (C) visited GECs office on September 17, 2016 to sensitize the technical team of GEC about the status of ground water in the state of Gujarat. A power point presentation was made by the Regional Director in this regard. The session also focussed on activities and information resources available with the Board. We are extremely thankful to the Board for sharing their knowledge with us.




World Environment Day 2016

On WED 2016, an extensive six day training has been initiated under GANDHI project for Dandi, Matwad, Samapor, Onjal, Aat and Sultanpur villages of Navsari district. It would sensitize the community about cleanliness, solid waste management and its significance in leading a healthy life.

Swachh pledge

GEC‬-ENVIS centre took a Swachh Pledge today as a part of Swachh Bharat Mission to propagate message of cleanliness in villages & towns.





GEC - ENVIS centre at science exhibition

GEC - ENVIS centre is participating in the two day science exhibition organized by Kadi Sarva Vishwavidyalaya at Gandhinagar. The science exhibition would remain open on February 5 & 6, 2016 at Swami Vivekanand Vidyavihar, Gandhiangar. It is expected that over 25,000 people would visit the exhibition to see various live models, scientific posters as well as to attend open house on role of science & technology for sustainable socio-economic development. GEC-ENVIS centre has displayed details of its core work at the exhibition so that more people become aware of its work areas.
